OBOE
Description
One of the least common band instruments and not available at all schools. The oboe often plays the melody (main tune) along with the flutes.
Things to consider
- Usually requires individual tuition and is not available to learn at all TSA schools (check with your band director or TSA office before enrolling)
- Requires fine motor skills and strong embouchure (lip muscles)
- Instrument and accessories can be expensive so please contact the TSA office about options to source more affordably

FRENCH HORN
Description
Less common than the trumpet and not available at all TSA schools. The French horn often plays the harmony (back up part) along with the saxophones.
Things to consider
- Requires excellent aural skills and independent personality. Would suit students who are good singers either solo or in a choir
- May require individual tuition and is not available to learn at all TSA schools (check with your band director or TSA office before enrolling)
- May be expensive to buy a new instrument – contact the TSA office about more affordable options
- Having a French Horn in the group adds a ‘warmth’ to the sound that is greatly appreciated in any school band
